Studio
Flash Wizard®
Light-ratios become easy in the studio
when using Studio Flash Wizard software for Palm®
OS* ver. 3.1 and higher.
The simplest lighting arrangement is to use only the Fill-light and the Main-light. You can choose from ratios of 1.5:1 to as much as 16:1. It's up to you. One is just as easy as the other because in each case you place the light at the correct distance the first time. The first photo below is 4:1 with a diffusion filter on the lens and the photo following it, of the same model, is 8:1 and presents a strikingly different mood (both shot in the same studio).

Flash Wizard®
Duplicating the color and shade selected
for a background is so easy when you use our software.
You only need one roll of black seamless background paper regardless of the color and shade you choose for your photo. We show you how to create your own set of Color ImagesTM from which you select your background colors and shades. Flash Wizard gives you the exact distance that you must place your background flashes from the background to reproduce the color and shade you have selected.
Works with film. Works with digital.

Express yourself through the quality of your lighting.
As you can see in the photos below, 3:1 conveys a very different message than 16:1 does. It's fast and easy for you to express your creativity and get the lighting right in the camera the first time. You don't even need a flash meter. If you already bought one, use it to establish your GNs and to prove to yourself that Studio Flash Wizard® really works, then just leave it in the drawer.

Flash Wizard's Studio Lighting Techniques explains the best ways to employ a Hair-light. It's a 50 page book (pdf file) that comes with Studio Flash Wizard.
The next obvious step is to add a hair light to your photos (when appropriate). Notice the subtle outline of light reflected on the jaw line from the illuminated hair (left).
It does so much more than just illuminate the hair.
Hair-light effects help add a third dimension to photos. It adds a little variety to the overall tone of the photo and helps separate the subject from the background. The Book that comes with Studio Flash Wizard® shows you easy ways to work with different hair colors. It also explains how to use polarizing filters over the hair-light to vastly improve the quality of the light.

Edge-light's function is quite similar to the Hair-light's function - except it's for the rest of the body.
Now let's add two more lights - the edge-lights (one on the Fill-light side and one on the Main-light side). Here are three examples of ways to use edge-lights.
The first two photos utilize dark hair and a subtle amount of edge-light (with orange filter) on both sides of the subject. The third and fourth photos utilize larger light-ratios on both side of the subject to produce a brighter, livelier result. All these different light-ratios, and color filters are so easy to use when you use Studio Flash Wizard® Light-ratio software. You will place your lights at the correct distance the first time. No more endless shuffling of lights back and forth.

Following are examples of selecting a color and shade from a Color ImageTM and reproducing it quickly and easily in a photo.
You just put the filters, that match the number on the Color ImageTM, on the flashes. Then input the FF number, f-stop, ISO, Tele' magnification (if used) and polarizer (if used) into Color Background Flash Wizard® and tap calculate. Set your flashes at the distance calculated and shoot!
